All of my love extends out to you and Keri. Waffles lived a rich life so full of love. He will be there when your time arrives, waiting to greet you, I know that with certainty...and he is around in spirit, now. <3 <3 <3 ~Maggie
I met Waffles at the Wild Noodle Ranch about 4 years ago. He was only going to stay a little while but, instead, he hung around sniffing and licking other guests. Waffles Bear eventually fell into the way of the Wild Noodle Ranch, laying down near someone he loved, keeping one eye open for danger or treats.
When I finally got to meet Waffles at home, I was surprised that he was the same Waffles I'd met before. You know how some people are one way in public, around strangers, and another way at home? Not so, Waffles.
I don't recall seeing any art or inventions or even what we would consider major accomplishments either at his home or here, at the ranch. But I do remember how vigorously he wagged his tail, how open he was to new people, and how brave he was in the face of a mortal illness.
Because of Facebook, I was able to follow Waffles' visits to the beach, to the sea, to the forest and around town. You never heard about him in the news biting kids or strangers. Never saw posters of him on telephone poles or Craigslist from running away or abandoning his people.
No, he laid down close to his woman in her hours of fear and illness. He loved his mothers unconditionally. He stayed. He licked and loved. He played with abandon and slipped away without a word or warning.
I don't know if dogs have souls. Or if they have consciousness that is eternal that has simply slipped to another dimension, where love and play continues as though nothing changed...
For me, a little hole opened up where the Waffles piece had slipped in so easily. The hole will close. I've been licked by Waffles. He loved his mothers. That's enough for me.

Good bye, Waffles.
